Tarangire National Park
Famous for its massive elephant herds and ancient baobab trees, Tarangire offers a quieter, more intimate safari experience just a short drive from Arusha. It is the perfect introduction to Tanzania's northern circuit.
A Hidden Gem of the Northern Circuit
Tarangire National Park is often overlooked by travelers rushing to the Serengeti, but those who take the time to explore it are richly rewarded. The park stretches along the Tarangire River, which flows year-round and serves as a lifeline for wildlife during the dry season. As the surrounding areas dry up, thousands of animals converge on the river—creating spectacular concentrations of wildlife.
Tarangire is best known for its elephants. The park is home to one of the largest elephant populations in Tanzania, with herds of up to 300 individuals sometimes seen along the riverbanks. These elephants are famously relaxed around vehicles, offering visitors some of the closest and most memorable encounters in Africa.
The park's landscape is dotted with towering baobab trees, some of which are over a thousand years old. These iconic trees, with their thick, bottle-shaped trunks, are a symbol of the African bush and provide a dramatic backdrop for photographs. Tarangire is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 550 recorded species, including the striking lilac-breasted roller and the colorful hornbill.
